LADY BLACKCATS REGIONAL CHAMPS!

The defending Class 1A State Champion Lady Blackcats defeated Hardin County 5-0 to win the 2013 Illinois High School Association Regional Championship for the 3rd straight year!  SNELL ADVANCES TO STATE!

Blackcat senior Zeke Snell won the 400 meter at the Illinois High School Association Sectionals and advances to the IHSA State Track Meet held at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston!

BLACKCATS BDC CO-CHAMPS!

The Blackcats defeated Chester 3-2 to claim a share of the 2013 Black Diamond Conference Championship at 9-1 in the conference!

BASS FISHING TEAM IS GOING TO STATE!

The Goreville Blackcat Bass Fishing Team, for the 3rd consecutive year, has qualified for the Illinois High School Association State Bass Fishing Tournament in Carlyle, IL!  J.T. Russell and Shon Messmer hauled in 19.5 pounds of bass to take 2nd place overall in the IHSA Sectional Tournament. Shon Messmer also won the "Big Bass" award by catching a 6.12 pound bass during the competition. Mason Bishop and Connor Seavers hauled in over 13 pounds in their boat.  The team thanks their volunteers Steve Sanders, Chad Morgenthaler, Randy Spurlock, Mont Bishop, Joel Trovillion, Bennie Adams, B.J. Barger, Randy Hudson, and the Johnson County Bass Club for all of their help this season.

 GOREVILLE COACHES HONORED AT STATE

Three Goreville basketball coaches were honored by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Asociation as "Coach-of-the-Year" for Region 21 due to their outstanding 2012-2013 seasons.  High School Girls Basketball Coach Mike Helton (31-2), Junior High Girls Basketball Coach Teresa Cash (24-3) and High School Boys Basketball Coach Todd Tripp (26-5) received their awards at Illinois State University in Bloomington, IL.  Coach Helton was also named Coach-of-the-Year by the Southern Illinois Coaches Association and will receive his award this fall.

JR. BLACKCATS TRACK REGIONAL CHAMPIONS!

The Jr. Blackcats Boys Track Team won the Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association (IJHSAA) Regional Track Meet and the Jr. Lady Cats took 2nd Place overall! The following student-athletes qualified for state: Paetin Arnold- 1600m; Shae Forby-400m, varsity relay, and 1600m relay; Schylar Messmer- 400 meter relay, varsity relay, and 1600 meter relay; Sarah McLain- 200m, 400 meter relay, varsity relay, and 1600 meter relay; Jasmine Luna-varsity relay; Katie Schuetz-400 meter relay and 1600 meter relay; Shayna Elms-400 meter relay; Alec Gold-Long Jump, Shot Put, 8th 100m, and Varsity Relay; Tanner Dunn-7th grade relay, varsity relay, and 1600 meter relay; Peyton Massey-7th grade relay, varsity relay, and 1600 relay; Braden Webb-7th grade relay and varsity relay; Logyn Frassato- 7th grade relay; Blaine Dunning- 1600 meter relay; and Anthony Davidson- 1600 meter relay.

 SNELL NAMED CONFERENCE "MVP"    

Goreville High School Blackcat Junior Zeke Snell has become the first boys player to be named "MVP" of the Black Diamond Conference West!  The 6'4" Center helped lead the Blackcats to a Conference and Regional Championship and the best record in school history!

RUSSELL SIGNS WITH AIB IN GOLF

 

Goreville Blackcat Senior J.T. Russell has signed a National Letter of Intent to play golf at the AIB College of Business in Des Moines, Iowa becoming the first player in school history to receive a golf scholarship!  Russell was 1st Team All-Conference in the BDC and set school records for score in both 9 hole and 18 hole events.  In the SIGA 2012 Summer Tour, Russell won medalist in 7 consecutive matches.  He is the son of J.R Russell amd Amber McGrath and plans to major in Business Communications at AIB.

WEBB NAMED 1ST TEAM ALL-STATE AND CONFERENCE MVP!

 

Lady Blackcat senior Alison Webb has become the first Goreville basketball player in history to be named 1st Team All-State by both the Associated Press and the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association!  She was also named “MVP” of the Black Diamond Conference West for the second year in a row!  The 6’ center helped lead the Lady Blackcats Basketball Team to 4 straight Regional and Conference Titles and three straight "Elite 8" appearances in the IHSA Supersectional scoring over 1,500 points in her career.  Alison was honored during halftime of the IHSA State Girls Basketball Tournament Championship at Illinois State University in Bloomington.

LADY BLACKCATS FALL IN SUPERSECTIONAL - MOST WINS IN SCHOOL HISTORY!

 

The Goreville Lady Blackcats lost an overtime heartbreaker to defending state runner-up Cowden-Herrick-Beecher City to end their season a school record 31-2 as a member of the "Elite 8" in state for the 3rd year in a row!  The seniors Alison Webb, Taylor Odom, Allison Sullivan, and Jessica Wright also broke the school record for most wins in their career going 112-11 in 4 years and winning the conference title in all 4 years.  Senior Allison Sullivan also qualified for the 3 Point Contest at the IHSA State Tournament for the 2nd time in her career.

BLACKCATS REGIONAL CHAMPS - MOST WINS IN HISTORY!

 

The Goreville Blackcats defeated Zeigler-Royalton 75-43 to win the 2013 IHSA Regional Tournament to break the school record for wins at 26, but were then defeated by Meridian in the first round of the IHSA Sectional Tournament at Hardin County.  To view the article in the Southern, click here.  They end their season 26-5.

7 JUNIOR BLACKCATS ALL-CONFERENCE - 3 ARE "MVP"! 

The Southern Illini Conference has released its 2013 All-Conference Basketball Teams and the Goreville Jr. Cats placed seven including the "MVP" of both teams!  For the Jr. Lady Cats, 8th graders Ashlyn Darnell and Cassandra Jones were named 1st Team All-Conference and Brenni Tripp and Nona Luke were named 2nd Team All-Conference.  Ashlyn and Cassandra were Co-"MVP" of the league!  For the Jr. Cats, 7th graders Braden Webb and Tanner Dunn were named 1st Team All-Conference and 8th grader Austin Sullivan was named 2nd Team All-Conference with Webb as "MVP" of the league!

BAILEY SIGNS WITH MCKENDREE

Goreville Blackcat Senior Jamie Bailey has signed a Letter of Intent to cheer at McKendree University in Lebanon, IL, becoming the first cheerleader in school history to receive a cheer scholarship.  Jamie has been a Blackcat cheerleader for 2 years and has been involved with cheer since she was in fourth grade.  Jamie also cheered on an All-Star cheer squad "Avalanches", for Snow Power Gymnastics.  She has been an active gymnast since she was 3 and started competing at age 5.  Jamie is the daughter of Chad & Tricia Bailey of rural Goreville.  Her current plan is to major in business.

 BLACKCATS DOMINATE BLACK DIAMOND ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS

Seven Goreville Blackcats were named Black Diamond Conference West "All-Conference" including the 2 MVP's of the league!  For the Lady Blackcats, Seniors Alison Webb (MVP) and Jessica Wright were named 1st Team All-Conference while Juniors Haley Darnell and Brittney Pritchett were named 2nd Team All-Conference.  For the Blackcats, Seniors Zeke Snell (MVP) and Dayton Tripp were named 1st Team All-Conference while J.T. DRAMA CLUB PRESENTS "GREASE"

The Goreville High School Drama Club presented the musical "Grease" to packed houses on Friday and Saturday Night.  With great last performances from seniors John Smith, Corinne Carlton, Markella Patterson, and Alex Andros, the cast and crew put on a seamless and entertaining production for all of the Goreville community and surrounding area.  The musical was directed by High School Drama Club Sponsor Barb Smith and assisted by Junior High Drama Club Sponsor Dana Harris and volunteer Nancy Farris.

PROM 2013

Goreville High School held its 2013 "Prom" with the promenade at the Illinois Centre Mall and the dance at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Marion.  Alex Lloyd and Allison Sullivan were named 2013 Prom King and Queen!

GOREVILLE FFA STATE CHAMPS IN COOPERATIVE AND HERITAGE

The Goreville FFA Chapter has been named State Champion in Cooperative and Heritage Activities Awards sponsored through the Illinois Farm Bureau and Growmark!  Projects including honoring our veterans with a "Where the Heroes Walked" display and our students restoring vintage tractors for community members were highlighted in the selection process.  The Goreville FFA will be recognized at the Illinois State FFA Convention and receive their awards. In addition, four Goreville FFA members will receive a free trip to Washington, DC to represent our school and Illinois State FFA in national ceremonies.

LADY BLACKCATS BDC CHAMPS!

 

The Goreville Lady Blackcats, ranked 5th in the state by the Associated Press in 1A, defeated Sesser-Valier-Waltonville to clinch the 2012-2013 Black Diamond Conference Championship for the 2nd year in a row!  The Lady Cats have won their conference 4 years in a row - two South Egyptian Conference titles and now the Black Diamond Conference titles.  The Lady Cats finish a perfect 10-0 in the BDC West!

JR. BLACKCATS REGIONAL CHAMPIONS!

 

The Goreville Jr. Blackcats defeated Jonesboro and Cobden to win their 9TH STRAIGHT IJHSAA Regional Tournament!  The Jr. Cats fell to Gallatin County in the first round of the Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association State Tournament at Rend Lake College to end their season at 26-2.

JR. LADY BLACKCATS 2ND IN STATE!

 

The Goreville Jr. Lady Blackcats defeated Pinckneyville and Gallatin County before falling to Aviston in the Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association State Tournament Championship!  The Jr. Lady Cats were escorted back to town in a parade by the Goreville and Johnson County Police Departments to an asssembly held at the school gym.  The Jr. Lady Cats end their season 24-3.

BLACKCATS ARE BACK-TO-BACK BDC CHAMPS!

 

The Goreville Blackcats defeated Chester to clinch the 2012-2013 Black Diamond Conference Championship for the 2nd year in a row!  The Blackcats finish a perfect 12-0 in the BDC West!

ALISON WEBB SIGNS WITH LOGAN IN 2 SPORTS

 

Goreville Lady Blackcat standout Alison Webb, a senior this year, has signed a national letter of intent to play volleyball and basketball next year at John A. Logan College in Carterville, IL on a full ride scholarship.  Logan, an NJCAA Division I program, is a member of the Great Rivers Athletic Conference.  The 6 foot tall center for the basketball team and middle hitter for the volleyball team, was named Illinois Basketball Coaches Association 2nd Team All-State and "MVP" of the Black Diamond Conference West as a junior in basketball.  She was named 1st Team All-Conference and All-South her sophomore and junior years and has already scored 1,000 points in her career averaging over 18 points and 9 rebounds per game.  In 3 seasons, she helped lead the Lady Blackcats to 3 IHSA Regional Championships and 2 Sectional championship "Elite 8" appearances for the first time in history.  In volleyball, Alison was named All-State Special Mention, Captain of the Black Diamond West and All-South as a junior and senior.  In just 3 seasons of the varsity volleyball program, Alison helped lead the Lady Blackcats to back-to-back IHSA Regional Championships and the school's first "Sweet 16" appearance.  Alison is also a starter for the Lady Blackcats softball team, winners of the 2012 IHSA 1A State Championship, and competes in the high jump for the girls track team.  In total, she has been an integral part of 8 IHSA Regional Championships, 4 IHSA Sectional Championships, 1 IHSA Supersectional Championship, 1 IHSA State Championship, 5 Conference Championships, 2 Conference Tournament Championships, and has been named to 12 different All-Tournament Teams as a varsity starter combined.  Alison is the daughter of Steve and Angie Webb of rural Goreville.

ANDROS SIGNS WITH REND LAKE

 

Goreville Blackcat Senior Alex Andros has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball next year for Rend Lake College in Ina, IL. A 3 year starter for the Blackcats, Andros hit .315 with 2 homeruns and 24 RBI's last year as a junior.  As a pitcher, he had a 3.85 ERA with 52 strikeouts in 38 innings of work.  He was selected as a Southern Illinois Baseball Coaches Association All-Star as a sophomore and junior.  Alex is also a starter on the Blackcat Basketball team as well as a member of the Blackcat Cross-Country Program.  He is the son of Luke and Tina Andros of Tunnel Hill.

6TH GRADER GOREVILLE SPELLING BEE GRAND CHAMPION    

On Friday, Nov. 9, 2012 the Goreville Elementary Spelling Bee took place at 9:30 a.m. in the gym.  Four students each from 5th-8th grades competed in the Bee for a chance to go to the Tri-State Competition.  The Grand Champion was Ryan Holland in 6th grade.  He will represent Goreville Schools at the Tri-State Bee in Evansville, IN In February, 2013.  If he wins at the Tri-State Bee he will advance to the Scripps National Bee in Washington , D.C. The other winners include Zachary Dudley (5th Grade), Shayna Elms (7th Grade), and Ellen Scola (8th Grade). K-3 CHRISTMAS PROGRAM PRESENTS "A DOWN HOME CHRISTMAS”

Goreville Elementary School K-3 children welcomed the holiday season with traditional Christmas carols from the opening "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" to closing with audience participation in "Joy To The World" when they presented the program "A Down Home Christmas" to a large crowd of friends and family.

GOREVILLE SCHOOLS NAMED TECHNOLOGY "SHOWCASE SCHOOL"

 

Goreville Elementary School and Goreville High School have been notified by SMART Technologies based out of Calgary, Canada, that they have been chosen as a "2012 Showcase School"!  The award is based on a competitive application process where school districts from around the world describe their commitments to adding technology and engaged learning in classrooms.  In 2010 and 2011, Goreville Schools added state-of-the-art whiteboard interactivity technology to their Pre-K, Elementary, Middle School, and High School as well as extensive training for their teachers on using technology to enhance learning.  The school was recently recognized by the Chicago affiliate of SMART Technologies when they traveled to Goreville in April to tour the facility and host a SMART Experience event for the region.  The event featured Goreville School's certified "SMART Exemplary Teachers" Rachel Jenkins and Melissa Robertson as well as Kindergarten Teacher Dana Harris and High School Business Teacher Diane Kirby where they provided inservice to parents and community members as well as teachers and administrators from school districts across Southern Illinois on the effective use of technology in their classrooms.  Due to the award, Goreville Schools will now receive technology training and professional development scholarships; exposure in global SMART publications and marketing materials; a profile in the SMART Showcase Schools web directory; a "Showcase School" display for their school facility; access to low-interest loans for technology purchases; and special opportunities to test new technology products from SMART as they are developed.  Goreville joins other Showcase schools from around the world including schools from Finland, Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom and their profiles can be found at www.smarttech.com/showcaseschools.  You can also view the article on the SMART Experience Event hosted by Goreville Schools in the Goreville Gazette here.


FORMER BLACKCAT GREG CRUSE NAMED TO BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME

 

Former Goreville High School Blackcat All-Star Greg Cruse, Class of 1974, has been selected by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association to be inducted into the 2013 Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame.  A four year starter, Cruse had a career scoring average of 26 points per game scoring 1,866 total points in his four years at Goreville High School.  He averaged 27 and 31 points per game respectively in 1973 and 1974  and even scored 52 points in a game his senior year.  The 6'2" Cruse scored in double figures in 43 consecutive games including scoring over 40 points 5 times in his career and over 30 points in 21 games for the Blackcats.  A 2 sport athlete, Cruse excelled in baseball for the Blackcats as well becoming the 1st Blackcat to receive an athletic scholarship when he signed to pitch for Murray State University in Kentucky.   Cruse is the 1st Blackcat athlete to be inducted into the Hall of Fame as he joins former Goreville coaches Jerry Qualls and Ned Ray who are currently in the Basketball Hall of Fame.


WYSE TEAM PLACES IN 6 COMPETITIONS

 

The Goreville WYSE Team (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering) had 6 placings in the Regional Competition held at Shawneee Community College on February 7.  Jeri Maze and Kayce Williams qualified for Sectionals by placing 1st in Biology while Cody Edmonds placed 3rd in Biology, Connor Seavers placed 3rd in Math, and Jon Smith placed 3rd in Chemistry and Engineering Graphics.

The Goreville Lady Blackcats Volleyball Team, just one year from winning their first ever Illinois High School Association Regional Championship, defeated Crab Orchard in three sets to take the 2012 IHSA Regional Championship! Alison Webb had a career-high school record 21 kills and Kaylee Webb had a career-high school record 21 assists while Ellen Wilke had 9 kills and McKenzie Shaede recorded 13 digs for the Lady Cats.  To view the article in the Marion Daily, click here.

LADY BLACKCATS FALL IN SECTIONAL FINALS - END SEASON WITH MOST WINS IN HISTORY

9 JR. BLACKCATS NAMED SIC ALL-CONFERENCE!     

The Southern Illini Conference has announced the 2012 Baseball and Softball All-Conference Teams.  The IJHSAA Regional Champion and State Runner-Up Jr. Lady Cats had four named - Camren Anderson (8th Grade) was named MVP of the Conference and 1st Team, with Macy Goins (7th Grade) and Cheyenne Walker (6th Grade) also named to the 1st Team while Ashlyn Darnell (8th Grade) was named 2nd Team.  For the SIC and Regional Tournament Champion Jr. Blackcats, they had 5 named - Brant Glidewell (8th Grade), Peyton Massey (7th Grade) and Tanner Dunn (7th Grade) were named 1st Team while Braden Webb (7th Grade) and Blaine Dunning (8th Grade) were named 2nd Team.

 ODOM SIGNS WITH MURRAY STATE    

Goreville Lady Blackcat Senior Taylor Odom has signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball next year for Division I Murray State University in Murray, KY. The 1st Team All-Stater helped lead the Lady Cats to our school's first ever State Championship this past year in softball. As a 3 year starter, Odom has a career batting average of .460 and broke the Illinois High School Association's Home Run Record with 24 during the 2011-2012 season.  Odom was also named All-South and 1st Team All Black Diamond Conference as a Junior.

EDMONDS AND SEAVERS ALL-SOUTH!    

Goreville High School student-athletes Cody Edmonds (Senior) and Connor Seavers (Junior) have been named All-South by the Southern Illinois Coaches Association!  They are the first football players in the Vienna-Goreville Football Program's history to receive this designation.  Edmonds is a two-time Black Diamond All-Conference selection and Honorable Mention All-State 3A while Seavers is the first player in school history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season. Both players are also All-State Acedemic nominees as well.

ALISON WEBB NAMED BDC "CAPTAIN" AND ALL-STATE "TOP 100"     

Goreville High School Senior Alison Webb has been named "Captain" of the Black Diamond Conference West Volleyball 1st Team All-Conference for the 2nd year in a row!  She also became the first volleyball player in school history to make the "Top 100" list as she was named All-State Special Mention for all IHSA classes 1A-4A!

WEBB AND WILKE NAMED "ALL-SOUTH"

10 BLACKCATS MAKE ALL-CONFERENCE 

A record 10 Blackcats/Lady Blackcats were named All-Conference in the Black Diamond Conference fall seasons. J.T. Russell (Senior) - 1st Team Golf; Madison Arnold (Freshman) - 1st Team Cross Country; Cody Edmonds (Senior) - 1st Team Defense Football; Connor Seavers (Junior) - 1st Team Defense Football; Alex Loyd (Senior) 2nd Team Offense Football; Colten Brown (Senior) - 2nd Team Offense Football; Dallas Mellot (Junior) - Honorable Mention Football; Alison Webb (Senior) - 1st Team West "Captain" Volleyball; Ellen Wilke (Senior) - 2nd Team West Volleyball; and Kaylee Webb (Senior) - 2nd Team West Volleyball.

2012 MARCHING BLACKCATS HAVE GREAT YEAR! 

The Goreville Marching Blackcats won 1st Place at 7 out of 8 total parades this year.

JT RUSSELL TIES GOLF SCHOOL RECORD!

JR. BLACKCATS AND JR. LADY CATS REGIONAL CHAMPS! 

The Jr. Blackcats Baseball Team defeated Cobden by a score of 16-6 in the Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association Regional Championship and the Jr. Lady Blackcats Softball Team defeated Jonesboro by a score of 10-0 in the SIJHSAA Championship for BOTH teams to earn a trip to the SIJHSAA State Tournament in Pinckneyville, IL!

JR. LADY CATS 2ND IN STATE - MOST WINS IN HISTORY! 

The Jr. Lady Blackcats Softball Team defeated Lebanon 10-0 (in 5 innings) in the SIJHSAA State Quaterfinals then defeated Christopher 10-2 in the State Semifinals, but fell to Chester 4-3 in the IJHSAA State Championship Game to take 2nd place in state!  The Jr. Lady Cats end their season with the most wins in school history at 23-4.

GOREVILLE HIGH SCHOOL WINS SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD!   

Goreville High School has been notified that during the Illinois High School Association State Softball Tournament last year, their Sportsmanship Committee chose our fans and our school for a "2011-12 Do What's Right! Program Sportsmanship Award"!  The IHSA's "Do What's Right! Program" provides an opportunity to recognize students, coaches, student bodies, and communities who demonstrate good sportsmanship.

      RUSSELL NAMED ALL-SOUTH!

Goreville High School Senior J.T. Russell has become the first Blackcat Golfer to be named All-South by the Southern Illinois Coaches Association!  J.T. was also named BDC All-Conference and holds the school record for scores on 9 and 18 holes.

THE GOREVILLE LADY BLACKCATS SOFTBALL TEAM HAVE BECOME THE FIRST TEAM IN HISTORY TO WIN A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!  The Lady Cats scored 4 runs early and tacked on 2 more with the help of a double from Senior Shelbey Miller and another home run from Taylor Odom to defeat Payson-Seymour 6-0 to take the 2012 Illinois High School Association 1A State Championship! Freshman pitcher Sydney Rushing did not allow a single run the entire post-season to help the Lady Cats dominate their opponents 46-0. The Lady Cats end the sensational season a school record in any sport 35-4 and ranked number 1 out of 173 schools!  A parade through downtown Goreville and a reception at the high school will be held for the Lady Cats at 3 PM on Sunday, June 3.  To view the article in the Goreville Gazette, click here.  To view the article in the Southern Illinoisan, click here.
